Career Fair Best Practices

Clinics/Employers

  • Prepare information and advise on practice opportunities, practice type (full-time, part-time, locum), scope of practice and size, services coverage, on-call obligations, and health record systems available on clinic.
  • Inform about remuneration and payment modalities available, practice operations, and incentives offered.
  • Discuss future growth and career development, team-based services, and peer support.
  • Provide support regarding site visits and foster professional connections. Residents have valued the participation of family physicians at the exhibitor table at previous career fairs, appreciating the opportunity to connect and build relationships.

Communities

  • Advise on settlement support, relocation, and services available in your community.
  • Provide information on community size, population, demographics, and proximity to clinics and/or other health services and resources.
  • Share community lifestyle and information about amenities, schools, shopping, recreational, cultural, and religious facilities readily available and accessible.
  • Offer support on employment opportunities for other family members, as well as housing availability.

Engagement tips

  • Conversations between family medicine residents in their first year can be different from those in second year. Identifying what they are looking for in their future practice and community will help them find their perfect opportunity.
  • Include interactive activities in your exhibit space that invite visitors to engage and connect with your organization or community, while facilitating conversation.
  • Give away swag, candy, or another free gift that is either branded or representative of your organization or community.
  • Create a free digital business card by downloading the Blinq mobile app. With this app, you can generate a QR code for another person to scan it, exchange contact information, and save it on your phone.
